Corrosion Coupon Analysis and Testing

Corrosion coupons have been used for a long time for in-field and lab testing because they are simple, affordable, and provide a clear overview of the corrosion processes.

Corrosion Coupon Analysis and Testing

Accurate corrosion coupon analysis is critical to understanding corrosion monitoring data from process streams, flow loops, and immersion samples. G2MT Labs corrosion analysis team provides thorough but rapid turnaround of analysis on coupons for clients, field service crews, and internal corrosion tests.

The Process of Analyzing Corrosion Coupons

The as-received samples are photographed (if requested), all important technical data is noted, and the coupons are cleaned according to ASTM specifications. The final coupon weight is analyzed with accuracy to 0.00001 grams and recorded in the project database. The corrosion rate in mils per year (or other equivalent rates) are then calculated and compared to the acceptable levels, which vary widely depending on the application.

Pitting Analysis of Corrosion Coupons

Pits are frequently observed on corrosion coupons and must be addressed appropriately. We measure pitting carefully to determine the extent and depth of pits, usually including macro photography of the observed pits. The pitting rate may be determined from this data; however, it should be noted that the calculated value is used for subjective evaluation and is not precise. One of the critical components of corrosion monitoring is photography and we have a wide range of cutting-edge photographic tools to ensure rapid but effective cataloging of the pits and corrosion we observe.

Corrosion Consulting Services

In addition to accurate coupon analysis and testing, G2MT Labs has PhD corrosion analysis experts with experience in sour service, hydrogen, storage tanks, and many other areas of corrosion.
